SIVASAGAR, May 10 - Incessant rain for the last several days has flooded may parts of Sivasagar town, aggravating the worst road conditions Sivasagar town is known for.
Melachakar Tiniali was in knee-deep water in the morning as the natural reservoir called Mori Dikhow ditch is encroached upon on all sides and the rain water spills over to the road. Further, the Sivasagar Municipality appears to be totally inefficient in dealing with waste and flash flood management. There are virtually no drains on either side of the road leading to Phukan Nagar from KPM Chariali. The most unfortunate matter is that neither the Sivasagar Urban Planning Department nor the Sivasagar Municipality Board has any scientific water management plan. After every shower, the Peoli Phukan Stadium built on the erstwhile Tengani beel gets inundated and all sporting activities come to a halt for the entire rainy season. The waterlogging problem at Phukan Nagar, Bezbaruah Chowk, ONGC Colony, Gohain Chowk have aggravated day by day.
The ever busy BG Road has turned into a quagmire with large craters and broken sides as the rain water collects over the road rather than going down the drain on one side. The drain is more a long dustbin as it is not constructed with any gradient. The huge sum of money that was spent on the road and reportedly given by ONGC has been all a waste. The Jamuna canal is also facing encroachment and siltation problem and has become shallow which cannot hold much water. The project to siphon water from near the Dikhow embankment in Phukan Nagar has not been completed till now.
