Importance of entrepreneurship development highlighted

JALUKBARI, Aug 19 - An entrepreneurship development programme to be conducted at the Gauhati University Institute of Science and Technology (GUIST) in association with the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) was inaugurated on Wednesday by GU Vice Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika.

Dr Hazarika inspired the participants with an informative and encouraging speech. He thanked the Minister concerned for taking positive steps for developing the science and technology sector.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof Manab Deka, Director, GUIST underlined the importance of entrepreneurship development and role of the government and the universities in this regard.

AK Baruah from IIE talked briefly about the theme of the 25-day workshop, while Dr SK Nath, Registrar, Gauhati University, highlighted the concept and necessity of entrepreneurship.

The chief guest of the function, State Science & Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta highlighted the importance of different skills and ICT in present times. He mentioned various innovative schemes taken up by the new State government. Developing a biotech incubation centre at North Guwahati, setting up an ICT-based centre at Azara, connecting 28,000 villages with internet facilities are a few of them, he said.

He announced that a Brahmaputra study centre would be set up at the GU to carry out research on flood and erosion. Another 24X7 ICT centre for students with adequate data base and strong connectivity with other universities across the globe would be set up, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Jogen Ch Kalita urged Minister Mahanta to develop the science and technology sector in the State and lend support to research works in the universities and colleges. He also mentioned the problems faced by research scholars and requested him to develop facilities including additional hostels for them.

Dr Kandarpa Saikia coordinated the event. Later the Minister visited a few laboratories at the GUIST along with some faculty members and research scholars. He also paid a visit to the Mass Communication department and urged the head of the department Dr Ankuran Dutta to come up with a proposal so that he can help the department.
