IMPHAL, June 10 Incessant rains since the last few days have caused massive overflow in the spillway of Singda dam and Nambul River both in Imphal west district, resulting in widespread inundation in the district. However, as the rain stopped in the morning, water level has been receding slowly.
Due to the flood, road communications in Imphal West district has been disrupted. An important part of Khwairamband bazar, Paona bazar, Dharmasala areas in Thangal bazar, shops and business establishments at Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal, Uripok areas, etc., have been shut down because of the flood. The district court at Uripok is three to four feet under water.
The main cause of the Nambul river overflow has been attributed to the excessive rise in the water level at Singda dam and flow of voluminous water through the spillway into Luwanglei Maril, Iroisemba and Lamshang river and then into Nambul river.
The forceful flow toward Tabukhong River caused flash floods in Kadangban, Lairenkabi, Heibongpokpi, Lamshang and Taothong in Imphal West district. Paddy fields in Imphal West and East districts were also inundated.
On the other hand, landslide at three major points along the 220km Jiribam-Imphal National Highway 53 has also affected movement of the supplies.
