Imphal-based CPWD SE arrested

NEW DELHI, Oct 4 - A Superintending Engineer of Central Public Works Department (CPWD) was arrested by CBI for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 33 lakh from a private firm to clear their pending bills and releasing advance payments to them.

The accused official Vinod Kumar Asol was arrested while allegedly accepting the bribe money from a Director (Project) of Visakhapatnam-based infrastructure company here, CBI said, adding the private company official had also been arrested.

Asol was posted as Superintendent Engineer of CPWD in Manipur�s capital Imphal.

According to CBI, the CPWD official had demanded a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from the company for clearing the bills, release of mobilisation advance and payment for the construction and work of a multi-purpose building worth Rs 210 crore in National Information Technology, Imphal. CBI alleged that the first instalment of Rs 17.5 lakh had earlier been taken by the Superintending Engineer.

Immediately after the arrests, searches were conducted at eight places in Delhi, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Dehradun, Lucknow, Imphal and Visakhapatnam during which CBI claimed to have seized a cash of Rs 19 lakh from a guest house in Gurgaon where the Director (Project) was staying.

The duo will be produced in the court tomorrow. � PTI
