GUWAHATI, Jan 21 The discussion held by the State Government here today with the Rabha and non-Rabha organisations to bring an end to the stalemate over the panchayat elections in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) areas failed to make any headway. However, the non-Rabha organisations are hopeful that the State Government would soon come forward with some positive steps to end the deadlock on the issue.
Meanwhile Rabha organisations are holding a meeting to discuss their future course of action following todays development.
Ajanajati Surakshya Mancha advisor Chandan Keshav told this newspaper that Dr Bhumidhar Barman, who is the advisor to the Chief Minister informed the non-Rabha organisations that the Rabha organisations placed a demand before him two days back for postponing elections to the three Zilla Parishads in Kamrup district and eight Zilla Parishads in Goalpara district. Dr Barman requested the leaders of the non-Rabha organisationsAjanajati Surakshya Mancha, Garo National Council and A-Rabha Samannoy Samitito consider the above demand of the Rabha organisations.
But the non-Rabha organisations refused to accept the demand of the Rabha organisations.
The non-Rabha organisations also raised the issue of delimitation of the 36 RHAC constituencies before Dr Barman and pleaded that the recommendations of the committee led by Dr Barman himself on restructuring the Tribal Belts and Blocks by excluding the non-tribal areas should be implemented to bring an end to the ongoing impasse in the RHAC areas.
They also refused to send three representatives to the meeting of Dr Barman with the Rabha organisations, which was being held following their discussion with him, Keshav said.
