GUWAHATI, Nov 8 - Friends, associates, students and family members today fondly remembered the matchless contributions and towering personality of renowned educationist and anthropologist Professor Annada Charan Bhagabati, who left for his heavenly abode on October 26.
A memorial meet was organised today at the Sudmersen Hall of Cotton University jointly by the anthropology departments of Cotton varsity and Gauhati University, the Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development and Anwesha.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Prof Bhabesh Goswami said Professor Bhagabati�s role in strengthening the anthropology departments in both the premiere academic institutions was immense. �He had a special way of working and was very connected to the grassroots level,� he added.
Purnima Bhagabati, wife of Prof Bhagabati initiated the tribute programme.
In her welcome speech, Upala Barua, HoD, Anthropology, Cotton University spoke about the life and works of Prof Bhagabati. Dwipen Bezbaruah, HoD, Anthropology, Gauhati University spoke about Professor Bhagabati�s insightful work on archaeological, physical and social anthropology.
�He kept himself updated with new concepts and theories of archaeology and analysed them in the context of Assam and the North East,� Bezbaruah added. Moana Bhagabati and Nirmal Bhagabati, daughter and son respectively of Professor Bhagabati, remembered their father as someone who celebrated life with much passion and was full of love for everyone. �Through him we learned to respect diversity and be tolerant. He was a true humanist,� they said.
Paresh Malakar, president of Anwesha, who conducted the memorial meet, suggested that a book be brought out on the life and works of Professor Bhagabati. A number of other noted personalities, including Professor Bhagabati�s nephew Dr Dipesh Bhagabati, also spoke on the occasion.
