DIMAPUR, Oct 9 - Despite the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989 in force, bootleggers are flourishing in the State, particularly in Dimapur.
It is high time the State Government either introduce some stricter provisions for regulating the sale of liquor or amend the NLTP Act, 1989, stated a release issued by the Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) today.
It expressed serious concern over many families suffering due to the ill effects of liquor.
In spite of the Act, liquor is found in abundance in Nagaland, it said.
The union appreciated the 5th Assam Rifles for busting a liquor bottling plant at 7th Mile on September 2 and confiscating a huge quantity of liquor at 5th Mile here on September 29. A few people involved in the illegal liquor trade were also arrested.
The prompt action and pervasive efforts of the Assam Rifles have helped in cracking down on illegal activities in Dimapur which pose a serious threat to the society, it said.
The apex student body of Dimapur said these two incidents had exposed the incompetence and laxity of the State Excise Department, which is the nodal department for enforcing the NLTP Act, 1989.
It appealed to the authorities concerned to apprehend the main accused in the 7th Mile case at the earliest. It also demanded that the arrested persons be booked and penalised in the most stringent of terms.
The union also warned all the illegal liquor sellers in the town that it would not remain a silent spectator or compromise on the illegal activities.
It pointed out that illegal liquor outlets are present in every nook and corner and are selling the banned item regularly in Dimapur.
The union said that it has unabashedly acted as a law-enforcing agency and busted some illicit liquor traders on a couple of occasions, and also compelled the law enforcement authorities to do the same.
However, these illicit entrepreneurs show no sign of fear towards the toothless law which seldom bites, and even if it does, it hardly leaves any scratches on their resilient tough skins, it added.
