UDALGURI, March 22 � The Excise Department of the district seized and destroyed 2,400 litres of illegal liquor from various places of the district recently. This was made known to media persons here by the DIPR and the Media Cell for the Lok Sabha elections in Udalguri district in a press note on Wednesday. Twenty-four such cases were registered under the Assam Excise Act 531(A) which also bans stocking of liquor. It directs the licensed liquor shops to issue cash memos to customers from now onwards.
A section of the residents feel that the Excise Department should raid the Udalguri daily market area and some places in and around Udalguri town where unabated sale of illegal liquor has been going on.
