Illegal constructions by Meghalaya govt destroyed

By CORRESPONDENT

DIPHU, Aug 30 - The West Karbi Anglong district administration has evicted several illegal constructions by the Meghalaya government inside Assams West Karbi Anglong district since last Saturday. The large-scale eviction was also carried out at Umru and Umru 2 localities, bordering Meghalaya on Monday.

It may be mentioned here that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authorities had raised severe objections against the silent aggression of the neighbouring State inside the autonomous zone of Assam on several occasions. But despite the objections Meghalayas Ri Bhoi district administration encroached a large portion of the Assam area on the pretext of carrying out developmental schemes. Now this has become a serious issue.

The eviction drive was personally supervised by Deputy Commissioner of West Karbi Anglong autonomous district, Debojyoti Hazarika along with other highly-placed officials of the district administration.

According to the district administration, property worth Rs 50 lakh constructed by the Meghalaya government within West Karbi Anglong district was pulled down on Monday last. The structures comprised two community halls, five IAY houses, base stone pillar laid by MLA of Ri Bhoi district, banners of Meghalayas Forest department etc. Mondays action came after the demolition drive at Khili, Umwang and Hawang region within close proximity of Meghalaya border.

Deputy Commissioner of West Karbi Anglong Debojyoti Hazarika later told the local media that government is doing its best to protect Assams land from encroachment and at the same time, the administration is also trying to safeguard the social harmony between the two States. Hazarika has cautioned the inhabitants of the bordering areas against any illegal work in the guise of development inside Assams territory.

Karbi Anglong Autonomous Councils Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang has expressed his pleasure over the bold step taken by Debojyoti Hazarika to free Assams land from the encroachers.
