Idols made of threads echo message of eco conservation

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Oct 15 - At a time when concerns are being raised regarding deforestation and rampant cutting down of trees, Goddess Durga is being worshipped to bestow her blessings to save mankind. In its Golden Jubilee year of celebration, Udharbondh Hospital Road Durga Puja committee is laying stress on forest conservation and environment protection as its Puja theme.

A 100-feet replica of Bangkoks Wat Traimit temple of the Golden Buddha in the exterior and trees with images of the deities inside constitutes the puja pandal. Interestingly, according to the organisers, the Durga idol is made totally from threads. We understand the ill-affects of colours used in the idols and hence we decided to use threads of different styles instead of toxic colours and paints for the idols. Artisans from West Bengal meticulously prepared the idols over a period of two months and we wish to disseminate message of environment conservation through our humble effort, said Rajesh Roy, secretary of the Puja committee.

Meanwhile, in an order issued by the District Magistrate on Monday, the Cachar district administration has put a ban on the sale of liquor during Vijaya Dashami for preservation of peace and harmony.

On the other hand, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan inagurated the Platinum Jubilee Durga Puja Celebration of BSNL Silchar Puja Committee on Monday in the presence of General Manager YK Bansod and other officials of BSNL Silchar. The Deputy Commissioner exchanged festive greetings for the people of the district saying, the festival of Durga Puja is here and people must enjoy every moment of it with great joy and harmony.
