GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - The 44th Assam State Inter District Weightlifting Championship (Junior and Senior) will be held at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium, Dispur from October 16 to 18.
Informing about the three-day championship, the secretary of the Assam Weightlifting Association (AWA), the organisers of the championship, Bhabajyoti Goswami said, about 200 weightlifters from 16 affiliated units, including SAI, IIT, NF Railway, Assam Police will be seen in action in various weight categories. Goswami revealed that competitions will be conducted in the weight categories of 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg, 85kg, 94kg, 105kg and above 105kg for men and 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg and above 75kg for the women.
When asked about the State weightlifters who represented the country in international meets, Goswami said most of them are in the national camp at Patiala while some of them are under treatment for injury.
He informed that the international weightlifters from Assam like Papul Changmai, Monalisa Sonowal, Swapna Priya Baruah, Zameer Hussain, Apurba Sonowal will not be seen in action. However, another international Champak Dutta will take part in the meet.
Goswami further revealed that as the game of weightlifting is very tough and technically demanding, to excel in the event players need to be highly dedicated. Proper infrastructure and diet is required to improve in this game which are not available in Assam. The AWA is urging the State Goverment to allocate a space in the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium so that they can set up an office and training arena.
Other AWA officials Basanta Das, Ramen Das and R Dutta were also present in the press conference.
