SHILLONG, June 5 - Muslims from across the State today celebrated Id-ul-Fitr, offering prayers at mosques to mark the end of the holy month of Ramzan.
In different mosques here, Namaz-e-Id was offered. Id-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan in which Muslim faithfuls undergo fasting from dawn to dusk.
It is also an occasion where people meet one another�s families and friends and lavish feasts are served. Muslims also give out �Idis� or gifts to children on the occasion. Another important aspect of the Id celebrations is giving zakat or charity to the poor and needy.
Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, in his greetings, hoped the �joyous festival will spread the message of brotherhood and compassion in our society. May this festival further strengthen our cultural bonds and bring peace and prosperity to all�.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, greeting the people on the occasion, said: �Let the celebration remind us of a sense of responsibility to bring people together in harmony and may it bring abundant joy and prosperity amidst peace, love and hope.�
Aizawl Correspondent adds: Along with the rest of their brethren in the country, the Muslim community in Aizawl on Wednesday celebrated Id-ul-Fitr to mark the end of the holy month of Ramzan, with religious fervour.
Thousands of Muslims offered namaz at the Zarkawt Field next to a landmark Christian church at Aizawl and prayed for peace and communal harmony in the State and the rest of the world.
The day was celebrated by Muslim devouts in other parts of the State too. Police officers said Id-ul-Fitr celebrations were peaceful across the State.
PTI adds from Kohima: Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Acharya and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday greeted the people of the State on Id-ul-Fitr.
The Governor hoped that the sacred occasion would usher in good will and harmony and further strengthen the values of composite society everywhere.
