ICU soon at Hailakandis SK Roy Civil Hospital

By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, Sept 7 - Amid the COVID19 pandemic, a 20-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will soon come up at the SK Roy Civil Hospital, fulfilling a long felt need of the people of Hailakandi district, said hospital superintendent Dr Sudip Chakraborty.

It may be mentioned here that though the hospital was established in 1992, it lacks many important facilities.

Dr Chakraborty said though there is space constraints due to setting up of the COVID-19 designated isolation ward, the ICU facility will come up in between the COVID and non-COVID wards.

The National Health Mission, Assam has sent ventilators and other apparatus for setting up the ICU. He said health functionaries, including nurses, would be trained to work at the ICU round the clock.

Health authorities here said the ICU facility would enable treatment of critical and serious patients as such cases are now being referred to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), about 46 km away from the district headquarters of Hailakandi.

Moreover, at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ICU would be highly beneficial to COVID-affected patients as SMCH is hard pressed to accommodate more patients in view of spike in coronavirus positive cases in Barak Valley.
