I-Day celebrated with gaiety all over State

GUWAHATI, Aug 17 - More reports of Independence day celebrations have come in. Our Correspondents report:

Mangaldai: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated in Darrang district with fervour and enthusiasm. Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar in the presence of MLA Mangaldai Gurujyoti Das, Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar, freedom fighters, other distinguished guests, government officials, a large number of local people unfurled the National Tricolour in the Independence Day function organised centrally by the district administration here at the Kachari Maidan. Freedom fighters Madhab Ch Barua and Maheswar Bora along with prominent personalities and public organisations from different fields of the district including Hiranya Kumar Nath, Associate Professor in the Deptt of Economics, Sam Houston State University, USA, Rupsikha Saloi, National award recipient actress and classical danseuse, National award winning health worker Sureya Begum and office bearers of community development public organization Youth Club were felicitated. Earlier, the chief guest garlanded the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Gopinath Bardoloi.

In connection with the celebration of the Independence Day, for the first time in the history of Darrang district, mobile blood donation camps were organised jointly by voluntary organizations Crystal Vision of Mangaldai and Inner Vision of Duni in association with Blood Bank authority Mangaldai on Sunday at Mangaldai, historical Pothorughat and Dipila respectively. A total of 61 donors including members of both the organisations, housewives, teachers, student leaders, youths, businessmen, mediapersons, army jawans etc., voluntarily donated blood and had a unique experience in the only air conditioned, sophisticated blood mobile of the Assam AIDS Control Society.

Goalpara: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated here at the district headquarter�s junior Technical School�s playground on August 15 with patriotic fervour amidst traditional gaiety and enthusiasm in the presence of a number of distinguished guests, officials and a large number of people, who attended the function under tight security.

Unfurling the National Tricolour and inspecting the guard of honour Deputy Commissioner JVN Subramanyam in his speech highlighted the significance of the day. Journalists Abdul Samaj Sarkar and Naresh Das Kalita, CM�s best community Action Award winner Sailen Das and a host of outstanding achievers besides sportspersons, best farmers, entrepreneurs, teachers, Booth level officers etc., of the district were felicitated on the occasion. The Army also organised a weapon display show at the venue.

Silchar: In sync with the rest of the nation, the 70th Independence Day was celebrated across Barak Valley with great enthusiasm on Monday.

In Cachar district, the main celebration was held at the SM Dev Stadium at the premises of Silchar DSA where PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya hoisted the Tricolour. Later, he also received the salutes from the troops of police and paramilitary forces on the occasion.

Silchar MP Sushmita Dev, Deputy Speaker and Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, former Silchar MP Kabindra Purkayastha, Cachar Deputy Commissioner S. Vishwanathan, Superintendent of Police Rajveer Singh were among the distinguished personalities present at the occasion. Various cultural programs were also organized to celebrate the day. Sweets and fruits were distributed among the patients in government-run hospitals and also among the inmates of the Silchar Central Jail.

Tezpur: Independence Day was celebrated centrally at Judge�s Field (Nehru Maidan) here with pomp and gaiety. State Minister Pallab Lochan Das unfurled the National Tricolour and received the guard of honour presented by ITBP, Assam Police, AISF, Assam Home Guard, Darrang College, NCC (Boys), Tezpur College, NCC (Girls) and St. Joseph�s Convent HS School.

In the programme, 36 people having contributions in various fields including culture, education, literature, sports, agriculture, weaving, health, industry, banking etc., were felicitated. Deputy Commissioner, Laya Madduri, Local MLA, Brindaban Goswami, ex-MLA, Tezpur, Rajen Barthakur, prominent citizens were present. This was followed by distribution of fruits in the hospitals, jail and orphanages, football matches etc.

North Lakhimpur: Lakhimpur district joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 70th Independence Day with traditional pomp and ceremony. This time, the district celebrated the historic day with a three-day programme starting from Saturday. The celebrations culminated in a grand finale on August 15 with the official hoisting of the National Flag and taking of the salute of the march past at the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School in North Lakhimpur.

The minister of Panchayat and Rural Development (Independent charge) and Minister of State for Cultural Affairs and Youth, Naba Kumar Doley hoisted the National Flag and inspected the guard of honour of the parade. Eleven freedom fighters of Lakhimpur district and three prominent citizens were felicitated on the occasion.

Dhemaji: Defying the diktats of militants, the Dhemaji district administration celebrated the 70th Independence Day centrally at Dhemaji Court Field with enthusiasm and fanfare in the presence of several thousand people from all walks of life.

Dhemaji DC Victor Carpenter unfurled the National Tricolour on the occasion and took the salute of 29 participating contingents before a large gathering.

The families of seven persons who had drowned in the last wave of floods were paid Rs 4 lakh each as ex-gratia. On August 16, homage was paid to those innocent 13 students and mothers who lost their lives in the bomb blast at the Parade ground during the Independence Day celebration in 2004

Hailakandi: The Chief Executive Officer of Zila Parishad and incharge Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Rupak Gupta ceremonially unfurled the National Flag in the main programme of Independence Day of Hailakandi in the premises of DC�s office. Four eminent persons, Sudarshan Bhattacharjee, Rejak Ali Laskar, Amusena Singha and Pritikona Paul were felicitated on the occasion. Freedom fighter Haridas Debnath was also felicitated.

Morigaon: Along with the rest of the country, the 70th Indian Independence Day was observed here at Morigaon with enthusiasm. Amidst a huge gathering, the National Flag was hoisted by Rakesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Morigaon at the Tarun Ram Phookan playground. He also took salute from Police , NCC, and paramilitary forces before hoisting the Tricolour. Several cultural programmes were presented by different ethnic groups of Morigaon district. In the function, two freedom fighters � Dasam Deka and Bhaskar Ballav Deka were felicitated. Several distinguished citizens � namely Maneswar Deori (noted researcher of Tiwa language), Ashok Deka (artist), Nasir Ahmed (litterateur), Wahed Ali (singer) were also felicitated. The rank holders of last HSLC and HS examinations from the district were also given ovation in the function.

Diphu: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour in the hill district Karbi Anglong. The celebrations began with the hoisting of the Tricolour in all Government offices and institutions. Tuliran Ronghang, Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) paid homage to the statue of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, at Gandhi Park, Diphu.

Subsequently, the official ceremony was held at the Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) playground where Ronghang unfurled the National Flag.

The Day was also celebrated with fun and gaiety in all the districts, civil subdivisions and administrative units of East and West Karbi Anglong districts.

Haflong: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated throughout the district of Dima Hasao with great enthusiasm on Monday.

NC Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa accompanied by Deputy Commissioner A Barua and Superintendent of Police Dr Dhananjay Ghanawat hoisted the National Tricolour ceremonially at the NL Daulagupu Sports Complex, Haflong in the presence of a huge gathering.

Mushalpur: The official programme of the 70th Independence Day celebration of Baksa district was centrally organised at the SP Office parade ground at Bathoupuri, Mushalpur where Mahadananda Hazarika, DC, Baksa ceremonially hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of students, teachers, officials, political leaders and cross section of people. He inspected the guard of honour of police ,students, fishermen, cattle-farmers and ex-armymen. The three-day programme of Independence Day celebration in Baksa was marked by cleanliness drives, felicitation of freedom fighters, lighting of candles and various competitions among students. Meanwhile, about 200 volunteers of the RSS took out a cycle rally from Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Mushalpur around the town on August 15 for the first time.

Barpeta: Independence Day was celebrated all over Barpeta district with fanfare and gaiety. Cleanliness, plantation, various types of symposia marked the three-day long celebration. Friendly football matches were played in different parts of the district. More flags were seen in personal residences than previous years and participation in programmes organised by the administration was also more.

The Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, Ashwani Kumar hoisted the National Tricolour at the playground of Barpeta Government Higher Secondary School. He also inspected the parade and accepted the salute of the police and NCC teams.

At Sarthebari, the first-ever celebration in a subdivisional level was celebrate where the SDO incharge of Sarukshetri subdivision, Sanjib Bora hoisted the National Flag at the proposed venue of the subdivisional headquarters.

Gauripur: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated centrally at the historic Prabhat Chandra Baruah playground at Dhubri with a two-day colourful programme.

Pramila Rani Brahma, Minister for Forests etc., hoisted the National Flag amid a large number of dignitaries, public and students. She also opened an exhibition of photos of freedom fighters of the district organised by the DIPR for the first time. She also inspected a guard of honour by the State Police, NCC Home guards, Scouts & Guides etc. Meritorious students were also felicitated.

Jhinuli Dutta, chairman, Gauripur Town Committee hoisted the National Flag at Mahamaya playground while Sabyasachi Kashyap hoisted the Tricolour at Jagmohan Vidyapith, Golakganj.
