I-D aquatic meet begins

GUWAHATI, May 28 � The 19th edition of the All Assam Aquatic Meet, organised by the Assam Swimming Association (ASA), got under way at the BP Chaliha Swimming Pool in the RG Baruah Sports Complex here today.

Sports Minister Bharat Chandra Narah formally inaugurated the championship, where 182 swimmers from nine districts are taking part.

Speaking on the occasion, Narah said the State Government is planning to set up scientific swimming pools in every districts. He also revealed that a physical education college will open at the Tepesia Sports Complex, Sonapur from July 1 under the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education. Attending the function, presided over by MLA Robin Bordoloi, Chief Minister�s security adviser GM Srivastava said due to lack of proper infrastructure, despite having adequate talent, the State�s sportspersons have not been able to excel properly in the national circuit. Organising president Bolin Bordoloi welcomed the gathering. Bhaskar Das is the organising secretary of the meet.

The secretary of the other faction of the ASA, Uttam Das, meanwhile informed that they have filed a contempt case, No. 177/2010, at the Gauhati High Court today against the championship.

The participating districts are � Guwahati, Dhakuakhana, Tezpur, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Mangaldai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Golaghat.

Memorandum to Sports Minister: The Charaideo District Swimming Association has submitted a memorandum to Sports Minister Bharat Chandra Narah requesting him to construct the proposed swimming pool at Sonari with a length of 50 metres.

The State Sports Department is planning to set up a swimming pool at Rajapukhuri, Sonari, which will be 25 metres in length and will not be fit to hold any tournaments.
