By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, April 27 The Centre has for the first time revealed that National Population Register (NPR) master database and the identity cards would be effective in checking illegal immigration and infiltration into the country.

The identity card envisaged under this project is meant for usual residents of the country, who are of 18 years and above, said Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken in a Lok Sabha reply.

The list of usual residents will be placed in panchayat gram sabha for invitation of objections and claims, he added.

The NPR project, same as the National Register of Indian Citizens being updated in Assam would be undertaken along with Census 2011 operation.

The NPR would have photographs and biometric of all usual residents. The data collection work for Census 2011 and NPR is undertaken by the enumerators, most of whom are school teachers and government officials, appointed by the district administration.

The entire operation is conducted under the direct supervision of tehsildars, who are designated as sub-registrars and the collectors, are designated as district registrars under the Citizenship Act 1955. Further, the village Patwari is designated as the local registrars.

The Government has also nominated a senior officer as nodal officer to coordinate the project, the Minister said.
