By Raju Das

SHILLONG, March 16 - Truth sometimes can be stranger than fiction and a classic example is Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma being homeless, despite being a crorepati.

I am the only homeless Chief Minister throughout the country, Sangma rued while replying to a call attention motion which was moved by independent South Tura legislator, John Leslee K Sangma, in the Assembly today.

Sangma, who lives in the palatial CMs bungalow here in Oakland, said that whenever he visits Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills, he stays in a transit home, as he is homeless.

The Chief Minister informed the Assembly that his house is under construction at Tura and until the time the work is completed he has to make do at the transit home during his official visits there.

On many occasions, Sangma stated, that people come and visit him without appointments during his stay at Tura Transit Home. He said that he tries to meet as many people as possible, sometimes even outside the transit home as there is only one sitting room in it.

Sangma has a declared asset worth over Rs 14 crore as per his 2012 election affidavit. Meghalaya has several crorepati legislators in the House of 60. According to Associations for Democratic Reforms, 36 or 60 per cent of the Meghalaya legislators are crorepati.
