Hunger strike threat over ST status

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 29 The All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani has threatened to resort to an indefinite hunger strike if the government does not give ST status to the community.

Meanwhile, the two-day hunger strike of the Sanmilani on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri demanding ST status concluded on Monday. The Sanmilani said that the government has been dilly-dallying on the issue for long and warned that it would be compelled to take up vigorous agitational programme if the government does not take any step.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Sanmilani has also decided to take part in a joint movement of the six communities for ST status in the coming days.

We also insist that the government reserve 80 Assembly constituencies for the indigenous communities as a constitutional safeguard for Assam and the Assamese, said the Sanmilani.
