JORABAT, May 13 - Protests demanding withdrawal of the government move to set up an Assam Rifles camp on a residential-cum-agricultural plot of land in a tribal belt in Sonapur area have now gained momentum, with hundreds of youths from about 50 villages of Dimoria assuring the AKSU of their support to the agitation.
Leaders of the Amri Karbi Students� Union (AKSU) informed that a large number of youths will join hands with the organisation as they believe their rights are being snatched by the government by setting up of such camps in the tribal belt.
�An average of 15-12 youths from about 50 villages of Dimoria, where we recently organised awareness camp on the �rights of the indigenous people�, have assured of their presence, contribution and the will to protest against the move to set up the Assam Rifles camp here,� said Ramen Kathar, general secretary of the AKSU�s Dimoria regional unit. �Our new members are very energetic and ready to face any situation but will not allow the setting up of the Assam Rifles camp here at any cost,� he added.
The student organisation has been organising a number of awareness camps in the villages of Dimoria, in a bid to gain a large number of supporters to protest against the government move to set up the Assam Rifles camp in Sonapur.
Leaders of six Amri Karbi organisations met the circle officer of Sonapur revenue circle recently, to arrange a meeting with the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner in order to resolve the issue at the earliest.
The student union said it would leave no stone unturned to safeguard the rights of the indigenous people.
The protesters also allege that illicit deals by a �strong group of middlemen� has led to a situation where a few strong organisations of the region that had initially stood against the government move have now become silent.
Along with AKSU, the other five Amri Karbi organisations that are protesting against the move are the Amri Karbi National Council (AKNC), Amri Karbi Arloso Asem (AKAA), Amri Karbi Bangthe Asem (AKBA), Amri Karbi Tsornam Ahartsi Amel (AKAA) and Amri Karbi Ruktsak Asem (AKRA).
