Human values have degenerated: Dr Gohain

By staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 21 There has been a degeneration of human values like love, compassion, fellow-feelings and tolerance in the present-day world. The prevailing socio-economic trends also encourage such developments.

Observing this on the occasion of Manovotar Din (Day of Humanism) observed to mark the 77th birthday of Prof Bhaba Prasad Chaliha at the Lakhiram Baruah Sadan on Saturday, scholar and critic Dr Hiren Gohain said that although man was the supreme animal he was forgetting that he was still a part in the scheme of things of nature. This, he said, was manifested in the wanton destruction and desecration of nature and the environment caused by mans greed and thoughtless action.

Dr Gohain also felt that people were increasingly getting oblivious of the power of the self, with more and more people resorting to the use of trinkets and lucky charms to ward off obstacles and evil.

The day was observed under the aegis of Manav Bikash Samaj where Prof Chaliha was accorded a felicitation on his 77th birthday.

Earlier, inaugurating the function, Gandhian Hema Bharali said that amidst the craze for attaining material prosperity at any cost, humans ceased to be humans, with wealth and power being the sole determining factor for ones identity and status.

She said that while scientific advancements had ensured progress on all fronts, opposite was the scenario when it came to shaping and moulding man.

A host of distinguished citizens including veteran journalist DN Chakravartty, Prof Md Taher and Dr Kishori Mohan Pathak attended the meet which was chaired by author and journalist Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora.

Chakravartty, in his address, stressed the need for cultivating the qualities of love, compassion and forgiveness among all to make the world a better place to live in. He said the time had come for the 690 crore people of the world to think that they were all inhabitants of a single nation.

A large number of people besides organizations wished Prof Chaliha on his birthday.

Dr Kishori Mohan Pathak formally released a book Mahatma Gandhir Jivan Katha by social worker Prafullabala Das on the occasion.
