Human Rights Day celebrated

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - State-based NGO We for Justice celebrated Human Rights Day 2015 by organising a seminar at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture here on December 13.

Dr Justice Aftab H Saikia, former chief justice of the high courts of Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir and presently Chairperson of the Assam Human Rights Commission, was the chief guest on the occasion, said a statement.

Dr Nirmal Kumar Choudhary, former vice chancellor of Gauhati University and Achintya Malla Bujorbarua, senior advocate of Gauhati High Court, were the guests of honour for the evening.

Dr Justice Saikia elaborated on the concept of human rights, while other speakers spoke on human rights violation - crime against women.

The participants included representatives from various sections of society and professionals representing various fields of education.

The UN General Assembly, at its Paris meet held on December 10, 1948, had made a Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR) to protect and promote human rights of each individual of the world community. Since then, this Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day has been observed every year on December 10.

It is with this end in view that We for Justice has decided to extend the Day of Universal Declaration of Human Rights beyond the periphery of December 10 of the year, said the statement.

We for Justice is an NGO headed by Justice SN Phukan, former judge of the Supreme Court as chairman and Dr Rohini Kumar Baruah, retired IAS officer as vice chairman.
