Huge cracks open up on Katigorah road

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, April 21 - At least 12 shops and a few families were evacuated from Haritikar part IV under Katigorah constituency in Cachar district after huge cracks developed along the 150 metre KH road stretch close to the Indo-Bangla border.

Few days ago, minor cracks were seen on the road adjacent to Barak river. However, situation has worsened with the passage of time as around 50 metres of the PWD road has subsided, the locals said.

On the other hand, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan visited the affected site on Friday and directed the officials of the PWD to block movement of vehicular traffic on the damaged portion and start construction of an alternate road on a war footing. Following the directions of Chief Minister, we are taking the developments as emergency situation. Officials of the PWD and Water Resources have been given clear instructions of repair work on the road stretch. Construction of an alternate road for movement of smaller vehicles is under process and an Executive Magistrate along with officials from the District Disaster Management Authority is monitoring the progress, the Deputy Commissioner maintained.
