HS students across State yet to receive textbooks: AASU

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 19 - Despite tall promises by the State government regarding free distribution of textbooks for students, the Education Department has failed to provide textbooks to students at the Higher Secondary level.

This fact came to light during a survey conducted by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in the colleges and HS schools of Guwahati. The student body expressed concern over the fact that Class XI students of the entire city were yet to get free textbooks.

It is the responsibility of the State governments department concerned to arrange for the required course books and make them available to the students in the beginning of the academic year. The government must take quick action and make books available in every school and college on time, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.

The student body further said that a good number of schools and colleges in rural Assam are deprived of course books and their complaints never reach the authorities.

After receiving complaints from students of colleges and HS schools of Guwahati, we asked our units in all academic institutions to take stock of the situation. We found that majority of Class XI students have not got their books yet. If the schools and colleges of Guwahati have not received the books on time, we can well imagine the condition of HS students in other towns and villages, AASU vice president Bipul Rabha added.
