HPC staff demo at Dispur today

By

GUWAHATI, May 7 - The officers and staff of Nagaon Paper Mill of the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) will stage a demonstration at Dispur on May 8, the first day of the ensuing special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, to demand immediate steps by the Government for revival of the mill.

In a statement here, the Officers and Supervisors Association of the mill said the mill stopped production in December last year, while the Cachar Paper Mill stopped production in December 2015. The statement said the mills stopped production mainly due to shortage of working capital and the Central and State governments must take immediate effective steps to ensure early revival of the mills.

The association said the officers and employees of the mills have not got their salaries for the last six months, while the statutory dues like CPF, pension, income tax etc., have not been deposited for the last couple of years.

The association said that the State Government must put pressure on the Centre for immediate steps for revival of the mills. It had taken up the issue with the Central and State governments on several occasions, but till date they have received only assurances, and nothing else.

It may be mentioned that State Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary had announced that the mills would be reopened and the headquarter of the HPC would be shifted to Assam. But till date, no effective step has been taken on the issues.
