Housewives stage protest against price rise

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Oct 29 - A group of housewives on Thursday staged a protest at Beltola market against the soaring prices of vegetables including onion and potato.

They demanded government action to regulate the prices and to bring stability in the markets of essential items of daily use.

Skyrocketing prices of vegetables in the city are giving a tough time to the common people, who are finding it difficult to cope with the situation.

The housewives under the banner of Sahoshi Mahila Mancha participated in the protest carrying posters with different slogans in support of their demands.

They blamed the profiteering syndicates of traders for the abnormal price rise and criticised the Food & Civil Supply Minister for not succeeding in checking those traders.

Prices of vegetables in the wholesale market have not increased so much as compared to the prices in the retail market. There is an urgent need to launch an effective price control mechanism so that the unscrupulous traders cannot cheat people citing false reasons, the protesters pointed out.
