BARPETA, March 10 - People of Barpeta are elated with the approach of their most revered festival Doul commencing from tomorrow.
Barpeta is already agog with the sweet tune of Holi Geet and the beating of drums. People from all walks of life, especially the young ones, are busy with the final round of rehearsal for the Holi Geet to be performed during the four-day extravaganza.
Holi commenced today with the Holi Geet competition organised by the Barpeta Anchalik Chatra Sangha. A number of groups from Barpeta and its adjoining areas participated in the competition, which spread the festive spirit throughout the town.
Now the people are awaiting the Bate Bate Holi, an annual competition organised by the Rising Club where groups perform along the roads of the town. It will be held tomorrow.
Barpeta Satra, the main attraction of the festival, has been given a fresh look and the disciples in general and the office-bearers of the Satra management committee are working round the clock to observe the festival flawlessly and peacefully.
The management committee, along with the Satradhikar, has insisted on celebration of the Doul keeping the Satriya tradition intact and for that purpose they have organised an awareness meet on the tradition of the Doul festival.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Thaneswar Malakar has declared a local holiday in Barpeta district under the NI Act on March 14, the day of Suweri, the concluding and the most attractive function of the Doul festival here.
The DC has also declared March 14 as dry day in the district. All liquor shops in the district will remain close on that day.
