HNLC threatens to call bandh on Tuesday

By CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, May 23 The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has threatened to call a 48-hour bandh from Tuesday if a Bill passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, to empower traditional heads, is not approved by the Meghalaya Government.

The outfit said in a statement that the bandh will be effective from 6 pm of May 26 till 6 pm of May 28 in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, unless its demand was fulfilled.

The HNLC said, a solution needs to be achieved by Monday. The KHADC Bill seeks to empower village chiefs and institutions through this proposed law.

The Meghalaya High Court has barred traditional heads to issue certificates to residents unless they are empowered by legislations. In the meantime, different regional political parties have demanded that the Congress-led State Government must find a solution to the crisis through legislations.
