Hitesh Dev Sarmas appointment as NRC Coordinator opposed

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 13 - Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque today opposed the appointment of ACS officer Hitesh Dev Sarma as the new NRC State Coordinator and called upon the State government to cancel the appointment.

Addressing the media here, Khaleque said that he has written a letter to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this regard.

Khaleque alleged that Sarma has over the years made various objectionable social media posts on Facebook on a number of topics, including NRC, Kaziranga encroachment, India-Pakistan cricket match, Greater Bangladesh and so on.

The State governments decision to appoint Sarma as the successor to Prateek Hajela proves that the government does not want an error-free NRC. The officer concerned has made many objectionable comments. A government official should be neutral and free from bias, said the Congress leader.

Khaleque said that Sarma is not a neutral or reliable officer to undertake the role of NRC State Coordinator. He said Sarma is partial and biased.

He added, If the State government wants the people to continue to have faith in it, if it wants a correct and reliable NRC, and if it wants continuation of peace and amity, then Sarmas appointment should be cancelled.

He said the government should appoint some other reputed officer to this post.

Sarma had also served in the bureaucracy under the previous governments headed by Prafulla Mahanta, Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi. If he had any objections with any policy decision, then he shouldnt have worked under those governments, Khaleque said.
