Historic Peasants Revolution of Sarukshetri remembered

By The Assam Tribune

BARPETA, Feb 2 The historic Peasants Revolution of Sarukshetri in the erstwhile Barpeta subdivision of Kamrup district was remembered on January 24 last. Lachima Gaon Unnayan Samiti organised Naam Prasanga in the Panagaor Tup where the Raijmelah the protest gethering was held in January 1894.

The CPI (M) local committee organised a seminar in memory of the Raijmel. The seminar held in the Sarukshetri High School premises was chaired by Fazlur Rahman, retired lecturer of History department, Madhya Kamrup College, Chenga.

Addressing the seminar Dwijen Barman, lecturer of Puthimari College, narrated at length the cause behind the Peasants Revolution in the late 19th century.

He lamented that most of the Indian mouzadars, Satradhikars and intellectuals of India either stood by the British side or remained silent on the problems faced by the farmers. Though the intellectal class of the Assamese society played a vital role in the later part of the freedom movement, they did not pay attention to the peasants movement, Barman said.

Criticising the present Central and State governments of neglecting the interests of the farmers, Barman said that the condition of the farmers has not changed in the independant India too. Rather it has deteriorated due to the wrong policies of the successive governments.

Bhaben Das, local Communist leader, said that the spirit of the Raijmel is going to be lost with the current of Brahmaputra. Terming the Raijmel as a significant occurrence as it was spearheaded by the laymen farmers he said that it laid the foundation of the vigorous movement against the British rule in the Early 20th century.

In his presidential speech, Fazlur Rahamn lamented that a movement which ignited the spirit of patriotism among the Indians is going to be lost and urged upon all to remember such events with reverence.

The colonial rule of the British was shaken by the peasants movement broke out in several parts of Assam. Due to the proposed resettlement of land and abnormal hike in the land revenue the farmers of the Sarukshetri mouza of the then Barpeta Subdivision organised a protest movement known as Raijmel. Panagaor Tup in Lachima was the centre of all the agitational programmes.

The movement got its momentum from the January21 to 24, 1894. British rulers then tried to end the movement in such a cruel way that even the men were compelled to pull ploughs. A number of the leaders were punished in several ways .

But it is a matter of regret that such a historic movement was not attended by the so-called nationalist governments of the country. Even the venue of the Raijmel Panagaor Tup, is not preserved well. The only memorable function that takes place here is the naam by the female folk on every January 24.

Misleading information: The public sector telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has enclosed such phone numbers and e mail id in its customer grievance redressal portion which are not accessible by the people to whom they are meant. Log on to the website of the BSNL bsnl.co.in the result will be an icon on the left side of your computer written as Consumers Grievance. Among others one can have the address of the public grievance officer of his telecom district or the appelate authority of the Assam Circle along with their phone numbers and e mail addresses.

But it is a matter of surprise that if you can mail your grivance to the given e mail id it is not accepted. The reply is that the delivery to the following recipient failed permanently. Even the telephone numbers appeared seems to be non-existent as they dont dial at all.

At a time when there is a number of complaints to lodge with the huge company regarding the service or any other matter the enclosure of non-existent telephone numbers and e mail ID has exposed the irresponsibility of the officials of the Assam Circle of the BSNL.
