Historian Ambika Choudhury killed in road mishap

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 � Author, historian and leader of the Koch-Rajbongshi community, Ambika Charan Choudhury died in a road mishap at Coochbehar in West Bengal around 10-30 am today.

He was 82, and had gone to West Bengal to attend a seminar.

The accident occurred when the Alto car he was travelling in, collided with a bus at Tetultola near Kamakhyaguri. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead. Several of his companions also received injuries and were admitted to hospital.

A pioneering figure of the Koch-Rajbongshi community, Choudhury was in the forefront of the demand for ST status to the community since 1968. He was also actively associated with the Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan that played a role in facilitating the peace process with the ULFA recently.

Ratnapithot Ebhumuki, Rani Abhayeswari and Bijni Rajyar Itibritta are among his notable works.

He leaves behind his wife, three daughters and two sons.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has mourned Choudhury�s death. In a message, said that the State lost a great literary figure in Choudhury�s death but his contributions would live on.

The All Assam Students� Union (AASU), in its condolence message, said that Choudhury�s death was an irreparable loss for the State�s national life.

Dr Hiren Gohain, convenor of the Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan, expressed on behalf of the SJA his grief at the passing away of Choudhury, the doyen of scholars of the ethnic Koch-Rajbongshi community, and a pioneer in studying the rich heritage.

�He was also a sincere advocate of peace and social harmony in Assam, and his demise amounts to an irreparable loss for the people of Assam,� Dr Gohain added.
