HAILAKANDI, July 9 - The Hailakandi district committee of the Hindu Jagaran Mancha has expressed serious concern over the forceful encroachment of the land of indigenous tribes living in different places of southern Hailakandi bordering Mizoram.
In a memorandum to the State Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Mancha alleged that a deep-rooted conspiracy is going on against the different tribes living in the hills of southern Hailakandi and this should be abated. The memorandum said that the jhum cultivation is the main source of livelihood and the miscreants are constantly damaging their crops and intimidating them to leave their own places. The memorandum narrated the incidents against these tribes from 2012 and sought the intervention of the State Government for their safety and security. It further mentioned that the area is totally neglected and the people are facing extreme difficulties due to the absence of educational institutions, hospitals, water supply schemes and proper road communication.
