Himanta unveils Alaboi battle monument

SUALKUCHI, Nov 11 - Hailing the bravery of the ten thousand Assamese soldiers who laid down their lives in the historic battle of Alaboi, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tueaday unveiled the Alaboi battle monument in front of the office of the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner at Amingaon on Tuesday.

Lauding the role of the Saraighat Journalists� Forum, which brought the Alaboi battle into focus, he also appreciated Kamrup Superintendent of Police as well as the president of the Saraighat Alaboi Smriti Rakhya Samiti Partha Sarathi Mahanta for the leading role he played in the construction of the monument aimed at keeping the memories of the brave soldiers alive.

Addressing a meeting that was anchored by the secretary of the Saraighat Journalists� Forum, Sarma, Madhusudan Medhi, Sarma said that during the reign of Aurangzeb, the Mughals wanted to ruin the Hindu civilization in India. Aurangzeb planned to destroy all the temples in India, but faced strong obstacles in the form of Lachit Barphukan in the east, Chatrapati Shivaji in the west and Guru Gobinda Singh in Panjab.

He called upon the people to be on alert even today and resist forces that seek to cause harm to the State.

In response to a plea for constructing the war memorials, the minister directed the DC Kamrup to select the site on the bank of the tank near the Kamrup DC office complex.

On the occasion, the minister also released a souvenir, Saraighat Alaboi, edited by Madhusudan Medhi. Sculptor Pankaj Dhekial Phukan, who constructed the monument, was felicitated in the meeting that was attended by Kamrup DC Kailash Karthik N, Additional DC of Kamrup Prasanta Pratim Kathkatia, Sanjib Saikia and other distinguished guests.
