Himanta to take battle to Mahantas turf

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 14 Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that he had requested Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to allow him to contest in the two Assembly seats of Jalukbari and Barhampur on Congress tickets, or only from Barhampur.

Disclosing this at a press meet here, the Minister said that this he had done in a bid to take the battle to the enemys camp, meaning former Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta.

I have identified Mahanta (as an enemy). I will fight him at his own place. I will at least be able to contribute five per cent to his defeat, Sarma said referring to the ongoing acrimony between him and the former Chief Minister.

He said that he served the All Assam Students Union (AASU) during the Assam agitation and its leaders Prafulla Mahanta and the late Bhrigu Phukan as a dedicated member. He regularly used to carry the statements of Mahanta and Phukan from Jalukbari campus of Gauhati University (GU) to newspaper houses riding a bicycle, along with a friend of his. But now the real facet of Mahanta has been exposed, Sarma said.

However, the name of late Bhrigu Phukan still commands respect and that is why a hospital and an auditorium are built in the name of Phukan in the Jalukbari Assembly constituency represented by him (Sarma), he said.

The unethical activities of Prafulla Mahanta have now gone to such a state that he (Mahanta) is throwing his weight (as the former Chief Minister) on officials to procure official documents, alleged Sarma.
