Himanta lays foundation stone of five projects in Barpeta

BARPETA, Oct 7 - Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma laid foundation stone of five ambitious projects here on Wednesday.

The minister, accompanied by party president of the State unit Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Barpeta MLA Gunindranath Das, Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed and Chenga MLA Sukur Ali Ahmed, laid the foundation stone for a women model college at Chenga at an estimated cost of Rs 33.67 crore, mother and infant care unit at Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Medical College at an estimated cost of Rs 25.61 crore, a model degree college at Baghbar under RUSA at an estimated cost of Rs 11.45 crore, development of embankment-cum-road of Nakhanda river under signature scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore and development of Chenga Bahari road at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

Addressing a public meeting held on the occasion, Dr Sarma said that the present government has recognised every constituency of the State equally whether they are occupied by ruling or opposition MLA. He claimed that the Cancer Care Hospital attached with the FAAMC is a ray of hope for the people of the western part of the State.

Dr Sarma alleged that there was a tradition of Titabar first during the 15-year tenure of Tarun Gogoi-led government in the State. But the present government has emphasised on equal distribution of development schemes so that the backward areas of the State can become compatible with developed areas. He informed that 16,000 km of rural roads have been constructed during the last four years with equal distribution to all the areas.

Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the minister said that the nation has lauded the steps undertaken by the Assam Government. However, he lamented that the percentage of death has slightly increased during the last few days from 36 to 40.

Replying to the allegations levelled by a section of the people in the State that the BJP is based on �Hinduism thoughts�, Sarma said that development of satra and namghar in the State cannot be termed as Hindutwa as it is the basis of Assamese society and culture. Assam cannot think of its base sans Sankaradeva, Madhabadeva, Harideva and Damodardeva. It is the responsibility of all Assamese irrespective of their religion, class and creed.

Later talking to reporters, Dr Sarma accused AIUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal of hatching politics in the name of enquire of the health of Tarun Gogoi in the GMCH.
