Himanta lands at airport amid tight security

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 31 - Amid the intensifying Congress-BJP acrimony marked by the ongoing protests, demonstrations and the war of words, former Congress minister-turned-BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was today received at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by several hundred BJP workers.

Sarma, who arrived at the airport from Dhaka via Kolkata around 12.30 pm, was taken to a waiting vehicle by his supporters by forming a human chain even as police maintained a tight vigil in and around the airport.

Following the arrest of a few BJP leaders in the aftermath of the Rajiv Bhawan incident on Tuesday, speculations were rife about an impending arrest of Sarma for his alleged role in the incident. This, however, turned out to be unfounded as there was no such attempt by police.

The BJP supporters shouted slogans against the State Government as they accompanied Sarma out of the airport.

The BJP supporters, in their over-enthusiasm, allegedly damaged a stall of the Meghalaya Tourism. A couple of journalists of an electronic media house also received injuries in the melee.
