Himanta exhorts young scientists to build models of utility

GUWAHATI, Feb 7 � Minister for Science and Technology Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday stressed the need for converting the Aryabhatta Science Centres into centres of excellence and called upon the young people to concentrate on innovations that would help the common people in their everyday life.

Speaking at a function on the last day of the �Ideas to Action� � an exhibition held at the city�s Assam Engineering Institute playground from February 3, � Sarma expressed satisfaction over the products and applications displayed by the students and assured support to the young scientists who would like to implement their innovative ideas.

It needs to be mentioned here that the five-day exhibition organised by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), a unique platform for the young talents of the State to showcase and share ideas, could attract more than 20,000 visitors.

Sarma, while encouraging the young participants to think on innovative line said that the entrepreneurs and industrialists of the State were borrowing ideas from outside as utility-based innovations were not forthcoming at the satisfactory level. Requesting the innovators here to come up with products and applications that are not complicated and serving practical purpose, Sarma said that the Aryabhatta Science Centres would be transformed into centres of innovations that will serve the purpose of the masses. He promised financial support to the centres in this regard.

Sarma added that more than 200 Aryabhatta Science Centres have given a new dimension to promotion of science and scientific temperament and announced that the talent of the centres would be brought to the notice of the country through an exhibition which the government is deliberating to hold in November this year in New Delhi.

Earlier, director of ASTEC, Dr SK Choudhury said that the exposition has provided an opportunity to know about new technologies and transfer of technology.

Innovator Uddhab Bharali emphasized the need for encouraging ideas that have practical application. The exhibition showcased his product� a innovative wheelchair for the physically handicapped that has toilet and dressing facility. His model won the first prize in the open model exhibition competition that carries cash award of Rs 40,000. In the same category Nipan Das, a Tezpur Universitry student won the second prize for his intelligent fan that carries cash of Rs 30,000, and the third prize of Rs 20,000 went to Dhrupad Sarma and Bhaskarjyoti Kalita of Assam Engineering College for their solar water heater cum storage system.

In the Aryabhatta State-level model exhibition competition, the first prize of Rs 15,000 went to Khanindra Barua of Jorhat block, the second prize of Rs 10,000 went to Mrinmoy Kr Sarma and Amritjyoti Das, Kamrup (Metro), and the third prize of Rs 5000 went to Samujjal Saikia, Majuli block.

In the extempore speech competition, first, second and third prizes worth Rs 5000, 3000 and 2000 went to Badarpur block, Lakhimpur block, and jointly to Bordoloni and Hailakandi block respectively.

In the drawing competition, the first prize worth Rs 5000 was won by Rangapara block, the second prize worth Rs 3000 went to Tamulpur block and the third prize of Rs 2000 went jointly to Khagarijan and Margherita block.

The products displayed at the exhibition would be compiled into a book by the government and this would have everything written by the young participants.
