Himanta alleges manipulation

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 31 - Crying foul over the final NRC published on Saturday, Finance Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said many names got included in the document because of manipulation of legacy data.

He also said the NRC authorities refused to accept refugee certificates produced by Bangladeshi refugees who came to Assam before 1971.

Names of many Indian citizens who migrated from Bangladesh as refugees prior to 1971 have not been included in the NRC because the authorities refused to accept refugee certificates. Many names got included because of manipulation of legacy data as alleged by many, Sarma said.

He reiterated that as requested by the Central and State governments, at least 20 per cent re-verification in the border districts and 10 per cent re-verification in the remaining districts should be allowed by the Supreme Court for a correct and fair NRC.
