KALAIGAON, May 18 - Patrolling teams of Mazbat Forest Range Office under Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri and army personnel stationed at Mazbat rescued a pair of endangered Himalayan bear calves recently near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

According to MP Sarma, DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri, the forest patrolling team headed by Mintu Boro rescued a pair of two-month-old Himalayan bears from the house of an Adivasi woodcutter in No. 10 Nala Dalanibasti village in No. 2 Dhansiri tea garden in the night of May 15.

The woodcutter said he had found the baby animals at No. 10 Nadi in the afternoon that day. However, wildlife lovers alleged that the woodcutter had captured the animals for selling these to poachers.

The bear calves were later handed over to Dr Brindavan Phangcho, who headed a team of experts from the WTI Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Chakrasila, Kokrajhar, in sound health for further care and nursing.
