Hike in compensation demanded

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 21 - The Silchar District Congress Committee has demanded increase in compensation from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for the victims of the recent bus mishap in which more than 30 people perished.

In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, the Silchar District Congress president Karnendu Bhattacharjee urged the Government to extend a helping hand and increase the amount of compensation.

The Government had announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the victims. But we feel that the amount is too meagre considering the loss. Hence, we demanded that the amount should be increased to Rs 10 lakh, Bhattacharjee said. He also said that the Government must sanction Rs 5 lakh each for the injured persons.

Further, the Government must allot jobs to the kin of the deceased, he added. The DCC members urged the Chief Minister to look into the poor condition of the Silchar-Guwahati road on NH-6 and also expedite steps for getting clearance from the National Wildlife Board for early completion of the Mahasadak.
