Highway blockade over suicide case

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Aug 3 - The NH-37 near Borborooah here was blockaded for several hours by a section of residents from the adjoining Dulia village following the suicide of one Dharmakanta Rai in the aftermath of a dispute over the functioning of a liquor shop in the area. Those who staged the highway blockade alleged that the administration was hand in glove with those running the liquor shop.

The protesters alleged that the liquor shop owner had threatened Rai on Wednesday, and that he (Rai) had committed suicide after this. Rai and several others were against the functioning of liquor shops in the vicinity of the area. They had on several occasions protested against the opening of the liquor shop under question.

The liquor shop owner had lodged an FIR against some of the protesters including Rai.

The protesters dispersed following the intervention of the district administration and the police.
