By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Nov 16 Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Saturday said that the media must also highlight the positive aspect of the government, so that people doing good work within the Government stay motivated.

Speaking at the National Press Day celebrations, which was held a day ahead of schedule, Sangma said that the media does bring out the negative aspects of governance on a regular basis, but on hindsight the positive aspect of the government also needs to be highlighted.

There is a tendency to report more of negative things in our media. If we do not acknowledge the positive things, one cannot be motivated to strive for better things, the Chief Minister said at the function which was organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations in association with the Shillong Press Club.

Sangma also lauded the efforts of the media in exposing corruption stating that the common people are still wary about getting involved in such matters of corruption. He said that one of the medias primary roles is to expose corruption right from the grassroots.

The Chief Minister further said that the letters to the Editors are important for the policy-makers as these are genuine concerns and views expressed by the common man right from the grassroots to the top echelon of the society.

Minister for Information and Public Relations AL Hek, who was the chief guest at the function, said that newspaper is considered as the mirror of the society and reports are generally considered as truth. He cited the instances of misrepresenting the facts and character assassination by some section of the media and urged upon the persons to verify facts before reporting on issues.
