High command to decide CLP leader

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 27 - The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held today failed to arrive at a consensus on the party leader. The meeting, held in the presence of central party observers at a hotel on the city outskirts at Mirza, decided to put the matter before the party high command in Delhi for a final decision.

Congress sources said that the meeting sought the views of the party leaders, including the 26 newly elected MLAs and a few MPs present in the meeting on their choice of candidate for the CLP chief and then resolved to put the matter at the party high commands disposal. The high command will take the final decision based on the feedback from todays meeting, sources said.

The names of Rakibul Hussain and Ajanta Neog both ministers in the previous Congress government and legislator Debabrata Saikia were doing the rounds as the probable CLP leader.

The CLP leader would be the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Todays meeting was attended by senior AICC leaders CP Joshi, Abinash Pandey and Ambika Soni besides party MPs from the State and the legislators.

The causes behind the pathetic show of the Congress in the Assembly polls, as also the partys strategy to be adopted for the future were also discussed in the meeting.
