By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 30 - Mourning the demise of Padma Shri award winning social activist and Gandhian Hema Bharali, the Assam Shishu Kalyan Sadan, Jalukbari today remembered her pioneering role in establishing the Sadan, a home for orphans and children in distress, way back in 1956.

She herself was associated with day-to-day works in the home like providing training on handloom and handicraft, gardening, etc. Apart from other leading ladies including Amalprava Das, Rajbala Das and Malati Barua, Hema Bharali also contributed immensely in day-to-day affairs of the Sadan. As communication was a problem in those days, they used to travel on boats and used to collect donations from public to help the children of Shishu Kalyan Sadan, a condolence message by secretary of the Sadan Dipika Choudhury said.

A tribute meeting held today on the premises of the childrens home offered prayers for eternal peace of the departed soul.

Social activist and vice president of Save Guwahati Build Guwahati Ajoy Dutta also condoled Bharalis death, recalling her as one of the most inspiring ladies of Assam and a true Gandhian. A great patriotic woman, Hema Bharali remained a dedicated social worker throughout her life. Her life and work would continue to inspire the coming generations, he added.
