Heart surgeon Dr Panda hurt in road mishap

GUWAHATI, Dec 27 � Renowned heart surgeon Dr RK Panda of the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai, was injured in a road accident at Samuguri in Nagaon district on his way to the Kaziranga National Park this afternoon. However, he is stated to be out of danger.

Police sources in Nagaon said that the cardiac surgeon along with his family members was proceeding towards the National Park in two vehicles, which were preceded by a pilot vehicle. Dr Panda, his son and daughter, were traveling in a Maruti SX4 vehicle, which collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction on the National Highway near the Down Town food court in the Samuguri area. Dr Panda, his son and the driver of the vehicle received injuries in the accident.

Senior police officers of Nagaon rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to Nagaon civil hospital. Later Dr Panda and his son were shifted to Guwahati in an Army helicopter and they have been admitted in the Gauhati Medical College hospital for treatment.

Dr Panda, who operated upon Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the Asian Heart Institute in August this year, arrived in the State yesterday on a private visit and was accorded the status of State guest. He stayed at the Raj Bhawan last night and started the journey towards Kaziranga this morning.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited the GMC hospital this evening to enquire about the condition of Dr Panda. As the Governor JB Patnaik is unwell, his wife also visited the hospital to meet the injured heart surgeon, official sources said.
