Head teacher missing for over six years!

By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, June 25 - A teacher of a Lower Primary school in the village has been missing for over six years resulting in a standstill in development of the school.

The school in question, Bekbekgre LP school under Bajengdoba Block in North Garo Hills has not seen the head master for a single day over past six years.

Ever since the retirement of the earlier headmaster, the new head teacher, Heliford B Marak, has not come to the school. Money meant for the payment of the cook as well as for school uniforms of the children is still with him and we are facing problems with the development of the school, said president of the School Managing Committee (SMC) TR Sangma.

School uniforms have become mandatory under RTE and money for the same and also the salary of the cook has been transferred to the head teacher Heliford.

The SMC has been at its wits end in trying to get the teacher come to school or even to get him removed. Incidentally, Marak lives in nearby Bajengdoba which is only about 20 kms away from the village.

The matter was earlier raised with both the SDSEO of North Garo Hills as well as the office of Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills. However, no action has been taken on the complaints.

We are really frustrated at the state of affairs as all complaints have landed on deaf ears. The SDSEO had come earlier to verify the complaint. However, even after this nothing has materialised to solve our problem, added Sangma.

When contacted, the DC stated that the matter was very grave and will be looked into seriously by the administration. We will ensure action in this case as the future of the is children is involved, said SC Sadhu, DC of NGH. The SDSEO, however, remained unavailable for comment.
