HC orders demolition of illegal high-rises

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Sept 28 - Meghalaya High Court today ordered demolition of high-rises here which have violated the G+3 building by-laws of the State Government.

The court has also directed CBI to register a preliminary enquiry against Meghalaya Urban Development Authority officer who granted permissions for such illegal constructions.

Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice SR Sen, who had earlier ordered sealing of all such buildings, said, there is no alternative except to order demolition of the additional floors of the buildings above G+3 illegally constructed by the respondents (23 of them) Accordingly, all the additional illegal constructions beyond G+3 shall be demolished.

The court in its order said the demolition exercise has to be completed within 15 days from today and the help of para-military forces may be sought, if need be.

While all records of these buildings have been seized by CBI, Justice Singh also sought registering a preliminary enquiry against the MUDA officer who granted permission. PTI
