HC notice to govt depts on cattle smuggling

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 4 - The Gauhati High Court today issued notices to the transport department and animal husbandry and veterinary department seeking inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the rampant cross-border cattle smuggling.

The notices were issued in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dhyan Foundation bringing to the notice of court the recent spurt in recovery of cattle from different parts of the State while they were being smuggled across the border.

The PIL also highlighted that due to lack of proper and adequate infrastructure, about 40 cattle have died. It also cited non-implementation of animal welfare laws, including Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Rule 125E of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, Transport of Animal Rules, 1978, and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Care and Maintenance of Case Property) Rules, 2017, among others.
