HC issues notices over Belgian woman with Assam roots

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 3 - The Gauhati High Court has issued notices to the Home department and the Director General of Assam Police along with three other respondents following a writ petition filed by a Belgian woman who is searching for her biological parents in Assam.

The petitioner who was born in Assam in 1983 was adopted by a Belgian couple from the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata in 1985, after being routed through the organisations unit in Tezpur.

The petitioner is currently staying in Belgium and is working as a civil servant in that country.

The other respondents in the case are the Superintendent of Police, Tezpur, Missionaries of Charity in Tezpur and Kolkata.

The High Court after hearing advocate Bijon Kumar Mahajan, the counsel for the petitioner, directed all the respondents to reply after six weeks when the petition will be listed before the court.

Meanwhile, the petitioner has filed a representation before the Assam DGP seeking the same relief and the court today also directed that the pendency of the writ petition would not be a bar on the DGP to take action on the same.

The 35-year-old petitioner decided to move the court after all her efforts to gather information about her biological parents turned futile.
