Haticherra GP president shot dead, five detained

SILCHAR, March 20 - At least five persons were detained by Cachar Police a day after Sukhendu Das (45), president of Haticherra GP under Borkhola constituency was killed in an attack by miscreants. Sukhendu is survived by his wife and two sons.

Meanwhile, Cachar SP Mughdhajyoti Dev Mahanta told The Assam Tribune that five persons namely Montu Chakraborty, Jaimul Ali, Darasing Rajbongshi, Mujibur Rahman Laskar and Nizamuddin Laskar have been detained and police is interrogating them. �We have detained five persons and the case is being investigated with priority. We are also looking at the law and order situation as well,� the SP maintained.

According to sources, Sukhendu Das was attacked by miscreants at an abandoned house at Japirband area here late last night. He was taken to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition. Another person identified as Rinku Senapati also sustained major injury and is undergoing treatment at the Hospital. BJP state spokesperson Dr Rajdip Roy informed that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has inquired about the incident and has assured financial assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured person. Former Union Minister Kabindra Purakayastha met with the family members of the deceased at the Leburband residence.

On the other hand, locals of the area took out a procession with the body of the GP president in which leaders of Cachar BJP including BJP district president Kaushik Rai, MLAs Kishore Nath, Aminul Haque Laskar, Mihir Kanti Shome and Amar Chand Jain walked and echoed demands for stringent punishment to the people involved in the crime. As the rally crossed the place where Sukhendu was shot, irrate crowd started pelting stones at the campus. Police and CRPF had to plunge into action to pacify the people.
