GUWAHATI, Dec 3 In response to a public interest litigation filed by local residents of Narayan Nagar under Bharalumukh police station, the division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Justice PY Vaephei and MR Pathak directed Haryana Bhawan located at Narayan Nagar not to host or organise any function within its premises.

The court also directed the Gauhati Municipal Corporation and the district administration to ensure compliance of the order.

Advocate Bhaskar Dev Konwar, appearing for the petitioner, drew the attention of the court that the Haryana Bhawan does not possess any up-to-date trade licence issued by the GMC and that it does not possess No Objection Certificate issued by the City Traffic Police.

It needs mention here that in Guwahati alone about 47 Bibhah Bhawans (wedding halls) are functioning without requisite permission from the authorities concerned.

Further, most of the wedding halls have been constructed flouting laid down norms related to parking facilities, which, of late, has become a major source of trouble for the commuters in the capital city.

Bursting of crackers till late in the night in the middle of the roads and drunken brawls have also resulted in public nuisance.

In the PIL, local residents alleged that frequent functions and parties hosted by the Haryana Bhawan have led to sheer inconvenience to public and that such halls should not be allowed to function in residential areas.
